The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) breaks drugs, substances, and specific chemicals used to manufacture drugs into five categories. The category or schedule a drug belongs to is based on the substance’s accepted medical use and the potential for the substance’s abuse or dependency.

Schedule I drugs are deemed the most dangerous due to their high potential for abuse and for individuals to become severely psychologically or physically dependent. These drugs have no accepted medical use and include heroin, marijuana, peyote, ecstasy, and more.

Drugs such as cocaine, Vicodin, fentanyl, and others are classified as Schedule II drugs. These are also considered dangerous and carry a high potential for abuse and dependence. Schedule II drugs have a moderate to low potential for dependence and abuse. Testosterone, ketamine, and anabolic steroids are in that category.

Schedule IV drugs have a low potential for abuse and dependence, including Xanax, Valium, and Ambien. The drugs in Schedule V have a lower potential for abuse and dependence than Schedule IV substances. These are substances like Lyrica, Robitussin, and Lomotil.

Texas uses these schedules to determine the severity of drug possession penalties. Four penalty groups were created based on these classifications, each with a distinct set of penalties. Marijuana is in a category of its own.
